Transportation Project Lead
About the Role
The Transportation Project Lead will drive and oversee the successful delivery of M-Pesa’s strategic payment collection projects in the transportation sector. The role is responsible for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet quality and scope requirements, while building strong stakeholder relationships across public and private partners.
Key Responsibilities

Define project scope, objectives, governance structures, controls, and acceptance criteria aligned with business goals.

Facilitate project workshops, trainings, and prepare Project Initiation Documents.

Develop and maintain detailed project plans with milestones, deliverables, resources, and ownership.

Gather and document business requirements with stakeholders and drive robust business case approvals.

Secure and manage resources, budgets, and sponsorship for project execution.

Monitor financial performance against budget throughout the project lifecycle.

Act as the main liaison between M-Pesa and clients, ensuring smooth communication and collaboration.

Provide regular client updates and ensure issues are resolved through effective escalation and follow-up.

Lead cross-functional teams, aligning them with project objectives.

Manage stakeholder expectations regarding scope, time, cost, quality, risk, and benefits.

Proactively manage project risks, dependencies, and issues.

Enforce quality standards, contractual obligations, and performance expectations.

Take corrective actions, including formal warnings or contract terminations in cases of underperformance.

Conduct daily station/site inspections and structured quarterly continuity workshops for lessons learned and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Finance, IT, or related field (Master’s preferred).
Minimum 5 years’ experience managing large-scale public service or revenue collection projects.
Proven experience in the transportation sector (air, water, rail, buses, or similar).
Solid background in stakeholder engagement, contract management, and team leadership.
Understanding of automated fare collection systems, smart card technologies, and financial reconciliation.
Excellent communication, leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
